What is a Kundli?
A Kundli, also called Jathakam in some Indian traditions, is a birth chart: a representation of planetary positions and the ascendant for a birth moment and place. Those positions are calculations. The meaning assigned to them is traditional interpretation, not proof that an event happened or will happen.
Prepare the right details
Use the date and local clock time recorded at birth, plus the country, state or province and city of birth. Your current address does not replace the birthplace. If the birth time is unknown or approximate, say so; a rising sign or narrow timing window may not be reliable.
A time-zone example
A Toronto birth recorded as 10:00 on 15 January 1990 corresponds to 15:00 UTC, because Toronto was on Eastern Standard Time. This illustrates a clock conversion onlyβnot a sample chart result. Historical daylight-saving rules must be checked for the actual birth date.
Read our Kundli explainer, the NRI time-zone guide and our methods and limits. Historical clock offsets are maintained in the IANA time-zone database.
